Wlanzarote started in 2000 when in the early days of broadband coming to Lanzarote, the telephone company Telefonica were a bit slow in rolling out the service across the island. Many people were frustrated in not having broadband in their area and Wlanzarote was formed by a team of dedicated computer and radio enthusiasts (some radio amateurs) who try to use cunning, ingenuity and imaginative ways of getting radio signals (which carry the broadband) to the places that need it. This uses a mixture of microwave links, wifi and 3G. Wifi + Lanzarote = wlanzarote. Since the early days of the project, Telefonica have rolled out their broadband service and most of the island can get broadband now. However there are still patches of no Telefonica broadband service for one reason or another. Or some people feel that they don't need a land-line at all, can rely on their mobile phone for telephone calls, but need the internet to get their e-mails and do a bit of web-surfing or to use Skype. Wlanzarote-ites are a group of people that have expertise, equipment, local knowledge, access to places that normal people don't, people that know people, that can get things done. This sounds a bit sinister, but sometimes this is what is required to get someone on broadband that may live up a mountain track or even in parts of Puerto del Carmen where there are no more landlines available.
